I downloaded the Téacs application, but it’s not in my messages folder
The Téacs application will be saved wherever your phone normally puts Java applications. This varies depending on the make and model of your phone, but here are some common places to try:
- Your phone’s main menu
- The Downloads folder
- Applications, or Organizer and then Applications
- Java or Games
Why am I only allowed 70 characters per text?
The reason for the 70 letters rather than the usual 160 is that the accented characters require the use of the full UCS-2 character set rather than the 7-bit standard. This doubles the effective size of the message, even if there are only a couple of fadas! It's an unavoidable downside of the system. Usually, the system allows 70 characters in the text or in the first text of a series of texts, 60 characters and 66 characters respectively for the second and third texts in a series of texts.
Tip: It states in the top right and corner of the screen how many characters are remaining in your text.
When I send a text message, it’s not displaying in my sent items
As Téacs is a separate application, it does not link with your phone’s existing text message functionalities. Consequently, Téacs won’t save any items to your Sent/Outbox.
Do I have to manually insert the mobile number of the person I’m texting?
Téacs is designed to operate with your phone’s contacts book. Place the curser in the Chuig area where you type the number of the contact, and press Options/Menu. The wording varies depending on your phone, but you should then see an option like Add from Contacts, Search or Lookup.
Is it possible to switch between texting as Gaeilge and in English?
Yes! While writing a message in Téacs, press Roghanna and then select Béarla to switch to English. Then press Aisfhill to switch back to Irish.
Can I save a message as a draft, and send it later?
Yes; just exit Téacs without sending the message. It will be restored when you next open Téacs, so you can pick up where you left off.
Will people who haven’t got Téacs be able to read my texts?
Yes; Téacs sends standard SMS messages which any modern mobile phone can receive.
Can I use Téacs on my iPhone?
Téacs is not currently available for iPhone. It was mainly intended for basic keypad phones without a full keyboard option; phones that have 3 letters per key. Others have requested an iPhone version so it may be developed at some point in the future but it is not currently available.
Is Téacs available outside Ireland?
Yes! You can download and install Téacs by following these instructions.
